Three-year validity for UTME results ’ll destroy varsity education — AAUA VC

Professor Igbekele Ajibefun is the Vice-Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State. He talks about the challenges facing higher education among other issues with PETER DADA

How has it been serving as the Vice-Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University in the last two years?

The last two years have been challenging but also rewarding in the sense that we have been able to make progress on what I met on the ground. On assumption of duty, I promised to build on that and I want to say that God has been helping me to do that to move the university forward. There have been challenges, especially in the area of finances, but we have been able to cope and the government has been able to give immense support to ensure that the university makes progress.

What is your take on the conflicting policies about admission into universities in Nigeria?

I see Nigeria as an unserious country where things are done wrongly and you see people agitating that they should continue to do it that way. These days, everybody is qualified to enter the university because there is no Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination. I was at Abuja for a meeting of VCs. We met at the National Universities Commission and the road to the venue was blocked by youths carrying placards with the inscription, “Cancel Post-UTME.’’ People prefer to take certificates without even going to the university. Our system is bad and unserious. We know what is right and we will never do it and you will see people agitating for the wrong thing.

The National Assembly approved that JAMB result should last for three years. If a candidate doesn’t read anything, it means that the knowledge the candidate acquired three years ago without going to school is still the same. It will destroy the university system. People want free things. They don’t want to make effort.

Why Igbos Are Now Decamping to APC

There has been an influx of South-easterners to the All Progressives Congress in recent times with notable a former Governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu pitching his tent with the ruling party.

The leadership of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has attributed the recent defections of politicians from the south-east to the ruling party to the commitment shown by President Muhammadu Buhari to execute vital projects in the zone.
The National Vice Chairman (South East) of the APC, Emma Enuekwu, stated this while speaking to journalists at the party secretariat in Abuja after a meeting of south-east stakeholders.
The meeting was to plan for fresh membership registration in the zone.
Mr. Enuekwu said Igbos are beginning to have confidence in the new administration and are wiser after the 16-year rule of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP.
“The problem with the south easterners before the election was that they felt that PDP was the proper party for the Igbo man which they came to realize lately was not true because they were disappointed. PDP was in power for 16 years and the Enugu-Onitsha road was not done, the Enugu-Port Harcourt road was not done, the second Niger Bridge was not done,” the APC chieftain said.
“When they realized this, they are now seeing that Buhari who has been in power for a little over one year has paid contractors and started doing something about the Enugu-Onitsha road, the Enugu-Port Harcourt road and has started doing something on the second Niger Bridge within one year.”

Boys outnumber girls in the world – UN

A report by United Nations, released on Friday has revealed that girls are substantially outnumbered by boys in the world.

UN, however, called on countries to invest in girls as the majority of the world’s 10-year-olds live in developing countries.

This year’s ‘State of the World Population’ report made available by the United Nations Population Fund, UNPF, focused on the well-being of 10-year-old girls as indicators of development success or  failure.

“An estimated 125 million 10-year-olds are alive today and among them over 60 million are girls and 65 million are boys.

“Over half of the global cohorts of 10-year-olds live in Asia and the Pacific, where there are 111 boys for 100 girls.

“Almost 9 in 10 of the world’s 10-year-olds live in developing countries where girls face obstacles to equal education, healthcare and safety,’’ the report said.

According to Regional Humanitarian Coordinator and Head of Fund, in UN’s Jordan office, Daniel Baker, failure to invest in girls is nothing less than planned poverty.

According to her, “Unless we invest in girls, we are planning to have a poorer future,’’ Baker noted.

The report also indicated that the world’s population grew 1.1 per cent in 2016 to 7.433 billion from 7.349 billion in 2015.

Boko Haram’s survivors now facing HIV/AIDS

At least 5,000 Internally Displaced People (IDPs) in 27 camps in Nigeria’s north-eastern Borno State have HIV/AIDS, a local official has revealed.

Speaking to the media on Thursday (1 Dec.), Hassan Mustapha, the Coordinator on HIV/AIDS in Borno, said most of the patients were women who were rescued from captivity in Boko Haram camps.

More than 1,000 patients were identified in Bama camp and 3,000 in Gwoza camp, while over 1,000 others are living in host communities.

Some of those affected were not effectively accessing anti-retroviral therapy because of stigmatisation, Mustapha said.

“The IDPs living with such ailments are constantly challenged… Most of them are shy, while some are afraid to be identified by others as carriers. They sometimes complain to us that they are not allowed to go out of the camp to access drugs in other centres.

“The honest truth is that the government is not paying priority attention to the plight of such persons,” Mustapha said.

As a result, many of the IDPs living with HIV/AIDS had already died of the scourge because they were not properly counselled and sensitised on the need to enrol under the HIV/AIDS control programme, he said.

According to Human Rights Watch , displaced women and girls were sexually exploited by officials, including security forces and camp leaders.

The UN says 75,000 children are at risk of dying of hunger in north-east Nigeria, as the region deals with the aftermath of Boko Haram violence. As many as 14 million people are in need of humanitarian aid in the region, the epicentre of the seven-year insurgency which has claimed more than 20,000 lives and displaced more than 2.5 million people in Nigeria and neighbouring Niger, Cameroon and Chad.

Mbanefo MMM owner unmasked

A Nigerian, who styled himself as Pastor Ernest Chigozie Mbanefo is the mastermind of the suspected Ponzi scheme known as MMM Nigeria.

According to an online report, Mbanefo is based in South Africa.

Nigerian Communications Week said Mbanefo registered the site MMM-Nigeria.net domain on June 7, 2016 about at about 5 pm Nigerian time.

NAN quoting NCW And Pageone report written as far back as September said Mbanefo made a single year domain payment. The domain will expire on June 7, 2017.

It was also revealed that MMM Nigeria is not part of MMM Global – a Russian company that was responsible for one of the world’s largest Ponzi schemes in the 1990s.

MMM Global was founded by Russian politician Sergei Mavrodi, his brother Vyacheslav Mavrodi and Olga Melnikova.
The name of the company was taken from the first letters of the three founders’ surnames (MMM)
But like MMM Global, the Nigerian scheme is also a pyramid marketing scheme where an investor gets a 30 per cent return on investment.

Around the world, MMM is feared.
In January 2016 the Chinese government banned MMM on the grounds that it is a pyramid scheme, (Ponzi scheme), and it is not registered in the country (and as a fraudulent scheme cannot be registered.
MMM recently crashed in Zimbabwe: Thousands of ‘Mavrodians’ in Zimbabwe were left in tears when the scheme crashed, losing tens of thousands of their lifetime savings.

PageOne gave Mbanefo’s address as 1 ROYAL STREET, LINDBERG PARK, JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA.
According to Page One, on the 15th of July, Ernest was awarded a certificate of completion of an online course titled ‘MMM Guiders School’. The certificate was supposedly signed by Sergei Mavrodi himself. He has since given himself the nickname the ‘Super Guider of MMM’.

To share news and information about MMM, Ernest also operates a subdomain ‘news.mmm-nigeria.net. The site praises him and projects him as the leader of the Ponzi Scheme in Nigeria.

“He is described as: MMM Nigeria Super Guider; Pastor Ernest Mbanefo, has been selflessly helping thousands of MMM Nigeria Participants whether or not they fall under his downline structure.

The brain behind the MMM NIGERIA REVOLUTION operation has been working selflessly and tirelessly towards the education, information and proper guidance for the MMM Nigeria Community’

Leicester close in on Wilfred Ndidi in £14m deal with Genk

Leicester City are in advanced talks with Genk over a £14 million deal for Wilfred Ndidi, as Claudio Ranieri prepares to strengthen the struggling Premier League champions.
Ranieri is close to completing a deal for the highly-rated teenager and expects to make Ndidi Leicester’s first capture of the January transfer window.

Negotiations are ongoing but Leicester are confident of signing the 19-year-old in the New Year in a deal which could rise to £16 million after instalments.
Ndidi can play in the centre of defence or as a midfielder in front of the back four and Ranieri believes his versatility could be crucial over the second half of the season.
Leicester captain Wes Morgan and Robert Huth have struggled at times during the club’s title defence but there has been a distinct lack of alternative options for the title holders.
Ndidi’s reputation is already impressive since he made his debut for Nigeria in October last year and Leicester are putting the finishing touches to a deal. It could even be announced within the first week of the January window.
Leicester’s recruitment has been under scrutiny this season after a number of signings failed to hit the ground running, yet Ndidi would represent a serious coup.
Ranieri is also likely to target a creative midfielder and a winger to strengthen his squad, who are currently two points above the bottom three.
Bartosz Kapuskta, who is yet to make a single appearance since his summer move from Cracovia, is poised to move out on loan in the New Year .
Leonardo Ulloa is also likely to leave if an acceptable offer is received, with Sunderland, Swansea and Hull City set to renew their interest when the transfer window opens.
Ranieri takes his team to Sunderland this weekend demanding a response from his players after warning they are in a relegation battle .
“Every day is a big, big match for us,” he said. “I am confident that we will work so hard with a strong mentality, because now we have to live in two ways. One Champions League, one Premier League.
“In the Champions League we are so happy, in Premier League we aren't happy. It is  important to be focused on the Premier League. We have to focus on what happens in the league.”

The Nigerian ladies defeated their South African counterparts 1-0 on Tuesday to qualify for the final against host nation, Cameroon.
Nigeria's Desire Oparanozie scored the only goal of the match on Tuesday in the 53rd minute, after a goalless half-time.

Final year student’s death sparks row

A final year Agricultural Economics student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Tobechukwu Okeke, has been found dead in his off-campus hostel. Some say he committed suicide because of financial challenges, citing the suicide note found in his room. Others debunk the suicide theory, claiming that he may have been killed. JAMES OJO (400-Level Mass communication) reports.
Is it a case of suicide or murder? Available evidence – a suicide note – points to the former, but some of his friends alleged that he was killed. Last Sunday, the body of Tobechukwu Okeke, a final year Agricultural Economics student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) was found dangling from the roof in his room. He left a suicide note, which reads: “My mother, father and brother, I am sorry. Sister Ify, may your children never suffer. Uncle Mathias, you gave me all. I am sorry. My department, I am so sorry.”
His off-campus hostel at 6, Odenigwe Lane in Nsukka, Enugu State, was thrown into confusion after his body was found. The late Tobechukwu, with matriculation number 2012/185649, allegedly committed suicide, days after he was said to have complained of financial challenges.
His neighbours returned from church to find his body. His Senate Lodge hostel was jampacked, as students gathered to see the body.
CAMPUSLIFE gathered that the incident may have happened in the wee hours of Sunday because the late Tobechukwu did not come out of his room in the morning. It was gathered that the body was found by his friend in the evening.
His department was quiet on Monday, following the incident. His mates were seen standing in groups, discussing the incident in hushed tones. There were no lectures for final year students because of the incident. Some of his classmates, who spoke with CAMPUSLIFE, described the late Tobechuwu as “brilliant and gentle”.
Elizabeth Agwu, his classmate, described him as “easy-going and hardworking student”. She said: “He was popular in the department because people saw him as a nice guy. He made people laugh and he was one of the best football players in the department’s and faculty’s soccer teams.”
CAMPUSLIFE learnt that the late Tobechukwu was absent from lectures for two weeks, leaving his colleagues wondering what was happening because he was not such a student.
Elizabeth said: “We discovered that, in the past two weeks, Tobechukwu did not attend lectures regularly. This was unusual because he was one of the first set of students to arrive for classes. Last week, I was told he called one of our classmates and begged them for money. We don’t know the reason he committed suicide, because he was doing very well in his studies.”
CAMPUSLIFE gathered that the body was evacuated by the police, while no arrest has been made. The body was taken away in a Toyota Sienna car at 7:30pm on Sunday.
Some of his friends, who pleaded not to be named, said the late Tobechukwu had been complaining of owing many people.
Kalu Lux-Sanctus, a 400-Level Linguistics student, told CAMPUSLIFE that the late Tobechukwu had just been given a contract to lay electric wire in the newly-accredited Department of Linguistics. “The wiring work was supposed to start last Monday,” said Sanctus, who lives on the same street with the late Tobechukwu.
Bernard Uju, a 400-Level Crop Science student, who said he knew the late Tobechukwu from their first year, stated: “I am not surprised he killed himself. We all saw it coming. We are in different departments but we still get to see each other on a daily basis. He is always looking frustrated, distant and sad. He begged for money a lot and all the money he had went to Bet9ja gambling.
“We noticed recently that he was broke, because he was begging for money. He was an electrician, too. Students used to give him minor electrical repairs. I never heard him saying anything about his family, because I don’t think they supported him financially.”
Reliving his last encounter with the late Tobechukwu, Chinonso Nebechi, a 300-Level Political Science student, who lives close to his hostel, said he saw him cleaning his mouth on Saturday morning.
“I saw him on Saturday when he was brushing his teeth. I didn’t know it would be the last time I would see him,” Chinonso said, adding that he did not believe the suicide theory.
He said: “I didn’t know it was Tobechukwu who died until I saw his picture. I still believe he was killed. How did the supposed suicide go? He was tall and his ceiling is not too high. When the body was found, his feet were on the floor. Only God knows what happened to him on Sunday morning.”
CAMPUSLIFE spoke to the landord of the hostel, who declined to give his name. The landlord said: “We have given out enough information to the public already. I am not ready to talk on the issue again. What we are planning now is how to bury the body. For now, we are still trying to resolve the matter with the police. When the event happened, they came to his room and searched everywhere, yet they are demanding for money. That is all I can say for now.”
The university’s Public Relations Officer, Chief Okwun Omeaku, said the incident did not happen on campus.
He said: “We are in the know of the development. Even though the victim was our student, there is nothing we can say about it because the incident happened in an off-campus hostel. We will allow the police to do their investigation. The Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the university is aware of the development too; we will make statement based on the report that will be submitted to the school management by the CSO after the police investigation.”

Outcry forces NCC to suspend data tariff hike

The outcry by Nigerians yesterday compelled the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to suspend the planned increase in telecom data tariff.
The directive issued by the NCC to telecom operators would have taken effect today.
Before yesterday’s announcement stopping the planned hike, the Senate called for a halt.
It summoned Minister of Communications Adebayo Shittu and NCC Executive Vice Chairman Umar Garba Danbatta.
A statement by NCC’s Director, Public Affairs Director Tony Ojobo said the decision was taken after due consultation with industry stakeholders and the general complaints by consumers across the country.
Ojobo said that the commission had weighed all of these and consequently asked all operators to maintain the status quo until the conclusion of study to determine retail prices for broadband and data services in Nigeria.
He said that the regulatory body wrote to the Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) on Nov. 1, on the determination of an interim price floor for data services after the stakeholder’s consultative meeting of Oct. 19.
According to him, the decision to have a price floor is primarily to promote a level playing field for all operators in the industry, encourage small operators and new entrants.
“The price floor in 2014 was N3.11k/MB but was removed in 2015. The price floor that was supposed to flag off on December 1, 2016, was N0.90k/MB.
“In taking that decision, the smaller operators were exempted from the new price regime by virtue of their small market share.
“The decision on the price floor was taken in order to protect the consumers who are at the receiving end and save the smaller operators from predatory services that are likely to suffocate them and push them into extinction.
“The price floor is not an increase in price but a regulatory safeguard put in place by the telecommunications regulator to check anti-competitive practices by dominant operators.
“This statement clarifies the insinuation in some quarters that the regulator has fixed prices for data services.
“This is not true because the NCC does not fix prices but provides regulatory guidelines to protect the consumers, deepen investments and safeguard the industry from imminent collapse,” he said.
The director said that before the new suspended price floor of N0.90k/MB, the industry average for dominant operators including MTN Nigeria Communications Limited, EMTS Limited (Etisalat) and Airtel Nigeria Limited was N0.53k/MB.
He added that Etisalat offered N0.94k/MB, Airtel N0.52k/MB, MTN N0.45k/MB and Globacom N0.21k/MB.
The smaller operators/new entrants charge the following: Smile Communications N0.84k/MB, Spectranet N0.58k/MB and NATCOM (NTEL) N0.72k/MB.
Ojobo said that the NCC as a responsive agency of government took into consideration the feelings of the consumers and decided to suspend the new price floor
The Senate asked its Committee on Communications to begin immediate comprehensive investigation into the matter.
The Committee was given one week to report back to the Senate in plenary.
The resolutions followed a motion by Deputy Senate Leader, Bala Ibn Na’Allah, (Kebbi South) in which he condemned the planned hike in data tariffs.
Na’Allah said that there was no doubt the hike would further impoverish Nigerians.
Vice Chairman of the Committee on Communications, Senator Solomon Adeola (Lagos West), described the policy as not only “unholy” but also “unfriendly”.
Adeola assured the Senate that the committee would act on the mandate and report back to it next Tuesday.
He said, “We are up to the task. And I can assure the Senate that we will swing into action immediately. We will invite all the necessary agencies that are involved in this policy that is unholy and unfriendly and get back to the Senate unfailingly on Tuesday.”
Senate President Bukola Saraki said the NCC failed to carry out enough consultations before announcing the policy.
Saraki asked the committee to investigate allegations of non-compliance with laid down regulations by telecoms operators.

Nigerian striker, Michael Uchebo’s quest for greener pastures in Portugal ends in ‘slavery’

The search for greener pastures has turned into a nightmare for Nigerian international Michael Uchebo, who currently has a contract with Portuguese top-flight club Boavista.
Since April 2016, he has not been paid and risks eviction from his house, according to the FIFPro Global Employment Report 2016, which documented his plight and that of others in similar situation.
Apart from being denied his wages, the striker, who represented Nigeria at the 2009 African Youth Championship and was called to the Super Eagles in 2014, has not been allowed to play for the club since the end of last season.
Uchebo is part of the over 40 per cent of the world’s professional footballers that have experienced delayed payment of wages, the global players’ union FIFPro said in the report.
The wide-ranging survey carried out by the University of Manchester and published by the union on Tuesday, shows that 41 percent of the 13,876 players who responded had been forced to wait for their salaries over the past two seasons.
The report which used Uchebo’s plight to illustrate its findings quoted him as saying during a press conference organised by the Portuguese players’ union in Lisbon that he was at a loss about why he was in the situation.
“I don’t understand why Boavista treat me like this,” he said. “I asked them if I did something wrong. They are treating me like a slave.”
He said he was banned from first-team training and posted footage on social media that appears to show him being forcibly removed from Boavista’s gymnasium and threatened with violence by security staff.
AFP reported that Boavista did not wish to comment on the matter when contacted it contacted him, noting however that in a video posted on Facebook earlier this month, club president Alvaro Braga said Uchebo’s statements “do not correspond to the truth”.
The AFP report said Braga accused Uchebo of turning down opportunities to join other clubs during the close-season transfer window and rejecting a settlement — which FIFPro says was one month’s salary — to terminate his contract.
FIFPro General-Secretary Theo van Seggelen was quoted as saying recently that the plight of footballers “is a wake-up call for clubs and governing bodies”.
“We cannot accept it any longer.”
The FIFPro Global Employment Report 2016 also found nine percent of players had suffered from violence and seven percent had been approached to fix matches.
FIFPro hopes the survey, which is the biggest of its kind, will shed light on the problems faced by players playing outside glamorous championships such as England’s Premier League or Spain’s La Liga.
Uchebo started his professional career with Enugu Rangers from where he joined VVV Venlo in 2009.
In 2012, he had unsuccessful trials with Stoke City and Rangers, eventually joining Cercle Brugge on a two-year contract after which he joined Boavista in 2014.
He was part of the Super Eagles squad at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

BREAKING: NCC bows to pressure, suspends data price hike.

The Nigerian Communications Commission on Wednesday announced the immediate suspension of the new minimum pricing template for data services by mobile operators. The new rate, which would have led to price increase in data for some Nigerians, was scheduled to take effect from December 1. The NCC said the decision is to allow for further consultation. The NCC’s decision comes a few hours after the Senate ordered a stop to the planned increase. Details Later.

Super Falcons into AWCON finals

Banyana Banyana failed to progress to the Africa Women's Cup of Nations final, after losing 1-0 to Nigeria on Tuesday evening.
Nigeria got off to an encouraging start, with England-based forward Asisat Oshoala causing a few problems for the Banyana defence.
Desiree Ellis' charges did create a chance of their own, as Mabatle went close for the South Africans in the 19th minute.
With the Super Falcons pushing a for an opener, Dlamini was proving key for Bafana as she produced a fine save to deny Nigeria a goal in the 25th minute.
Banyana did have the ball in the back of the net just before the halftime break, but the effort was flagged offside.
The Nigerians broke the deadlock in the 57th minute courtesy of a fine free-kick from Desire Oparanozi.
Ellis responded by introducing Thembi Kgatlana, who seemed to have made an impact, as she linked up with Mcgoyi and Linda Motlhalo.
Banyana nearly broke the deadlock in the 86th minute, but they had two efforts cleared off the line by the Nigerian defence.
However, Banyana could not find the equalising goal in the closing stages, as the Super Falcons held on for the victory.
South Africa will now face Ghana in the third/fourth play-off on Friday evening.

Man City Keeping Close Tabs On Enterprising Nigerian Forward Dennis Bonaventure Dubbed ” Nigerian Neymar”

Following the success of Kelechi Iheanacho at Manchester City, the Etihad based outfit could yet add another Nigerian to their squad, going by reports gathered by the editorial staff of Owngoalnigeria.com.
Scouts from English Premiership giants Manchester City were in the stands when Zorya took on Stal Kamianske in a Ukraine Premier League game, with Nigerian 18 year old forward Emmanuel Dennis Bonaventure starting for Zorya.
The 18 year old is reportedly one of the players scouts of Manchester City came to watch alongside other players, as the winners of the Manchester derby step up their transfer activity in the country where one of their latest signing Oleksandr Zinchenko comes from.
Infront of the scouts of Manchester City, Bonaventure was on for 72 minute before he was substituted for Denys Bezborodko in the game that ended 2-2. A product of Football Academy Abuja, he is nicknamed Neymar due to his similar hairstyle with that of the Barcelona Brazilian super star.
So far he has made four appearances for Zorya, in what is his first full season as a professional footballer. He also has one goal to his name and one caution picked up due to excessive celebration after scoring in the league opener on his professional debut.

Lagos Police Arrest Two For Pouring Chemical On Girl, Using Her To Beg

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested two women one Amadi and Mama Esther for allegedly abusing a nine-year-old girl, Joy Esemonu, in the FESTAC Town area of the state.
It was gathered that Amadi allegedly poured chemical on Esemonu, which made her sustain injuries in different parts of her body.
A Punch correspondent was told that Esemonu was subsequently led everyday by the suspect to a pedestrian bridge in the FESTAC area where she was made to beg for alms from passersby.
At the end of every begging trip, the two women reportedly shared the money collected.
However, a Good Samaritan, who observed the victim’s condition on the bridge, reportedly alerted policemen from the FESTAC division, leading to the arrest of the two women.
The matter was subsequently referred to the Office of the Public Defender, which transferred the victim to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons and other related matters.
A social worker who was privy to the case told Punch that Mama Esther was a relation of the victim and had lured her from their village in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
He said, “The girl lived in Port Harcourt with her parents. But last year, her mother handed her over to Mama Esther after the latter promised to support the family by taking the girl to Lagos. She said the girl would continue her education when they get to Lagos.
“However, when she brought her to Lagos, she decided to hand her over to Amadi, who she owed some money. The woman then decided to use her for begging.
“The girl said she noticed that Amadi would make her sleep before pouring a substance suspected to be chemical on her body. By the time she woke up and scratched the spots after feeling some pains, they would become sore. The woman would then bandaged the place and take her out for begging.
“She said whenever the injuries heal, she would make her sleep again and pour the chemical on her. The woman started with her bottoms and then her laps. She said such had happened about four different times.”
Another source said Mama Esther, in her confession, claimed that she always collected between N2,500 to N3,000 as her share every day.
The source said the money the women were making off the victim kept them in the fraudulent business.
“The girl said although they lived in a slum in the Oyingbo area, the woman always took her to FESTAC to beg. She said there were other girls in the slum. She could not recall the exact place where her parents lived in Port Harcourt. She mentioned streets like Rumuokoro, Saint Jude and Rumola. She said she attended Saint Jude Academy and was in basic three before she was brought to Lagos. The girl explained that her younger sister, Ebierechi, was with another family. However, the suspect had maintained that they lived under the bridge,” he added.
The Director of OPD, Mrs. Salami Olubukola, condemned the action of the women, saying the state would ensure that justice was served.
She said, “This is a despicable act and the height of man’s inhumanity to man which must be condemned by all. Lagos State will never condone child abuse and cruelty and we shall go to any length to protect our children from barbaric acts.”
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, said, “Investigation reveals that it is their stock in trade.”
The NAPTIP Lagos zonal coordinator, Mr. Joseph Famakin, confirmed that the victim was in the agency’s shelter.
He said, “The girl was brought to us last Friday and she is going through some psychological counseling and treatment. We are also investigating if there are other people involved in the crime. The two suspects are with the police.”

Victor Osimhen Set To Return To Nigeria To Process Work Permit

Victor Osimhen’s representative Ariyo Igbayilola has sounded it loud and clear that the Nigeria international is as fit as a fiddle, contrary to speculations in a section of the media that he sustained a serious injury at Wolfsburg training.
Wolfsburg will active the preliminary contract Osimhen and his camp signed with the club in January, when he would have attained the age of majority.
And the 17-year-old is set to return to Nigeria any moment from now to begin processing his work permit application, which will pave the way for him to begin his professional career.
“No, there is nothing wrong with Victor whatsoever. He is fine and ready to go,” Ariyo told africanfootball.com
“He has played as many as four friendly matches for Wolfsburg and they in their wisdom have thought it wise to rest the boy.
“He will soon be back in Nigeria to work on his papers.”
A product of Ultimate Strikers, Osimhen has caps for Nigeria U17, U20 and U23 national teams, and has trained with the Super Eagles.

Manchester United transfer news: Chelsea's John Obi Mikel wanted by Jose Mourinho for Old Trafford reunion

Manchester United are reportedly looking to snap up Chelsea’s John Obi Mikel in the summer as Jose Mourinho looks to tighten up his midfield. The Nigerian is a free agent come the end of the season and could reunite with his former boss at Manchester United on a free.
Having failed to make a single appearance for Antonio Conte’s side this season, Mikel looks like he’s counting down the days before he can start playing regularly once again and given Conte’s strict formation tactics, the Nigerian is likely to look for a place elsewhere for first-team football.
Jose Mourinho is desperately in search of a defensive midfielder who could come in and replace Michael Carrick in the centre of the field. And having managed the Nigerian before, Mourinho would find him a comfortable option given his versatility and his ability to break down down plays with ease.
And given he could join the club on a free, Mourinho would be more than interested knowing very well he needn’t negotiate a price or even face too much competition to sign him. For Mikel, it’s a win, too. He’s clearly not a Conte-esque player and when a manager whom he’s had success in the past with comes calling, it would be foolish to look the other way.
Manchester United are also said to be monitoring the likes of Marco Verratti, Toni Kroos and Arturo Vidal. The Portuguese manager needs someone who could be the perfect shield for his back-four and do enough of a defensive job to ensure the likes of Paul Pogba and Juan Mata can go forward knowing very well there’s someone behind them who can clean up the mess should the attack break down.
Chelsea haven’t used Mikel this season simply because he isn’t the kind of mobile midfielder Conte likes to have in the centre of the pitch. You could say the same for Matic, too but the Siberian has been stellar this season in building up attacks and breaking down plays even though he tends to drift forward more often.
That’s the kind of versatility a player is expected to have if he’s to be a regular started under the Italian. AS Roma’s Radja Nainggolan, Paris Saint-Germain’s Marco Verratti, Bayern Munich ’s Thiago Alcantara and Arsenal’ s Santi Cazorla are linked with the West London club given their ability to play multiple roles and comfortable at that – anywhere along the middle four.

We’re starting to think Manchester United is cursed – Pogba

Paul Pogba has admitted that Manchester United fear they may be “cursed”, because of their ill-luck.
The Red Devils have drawn their last four league fixtures at Old Trafford, despite dominating most of those games and Pogba revealed the players cannot believe their luck.
Their 1-1 draw with West Ham on Sunday, leaves them 11 points behind leaders Chelsea and the £89.3million man says they deserve better.
He told SFR Sport: “We’re going to start thinking we’re cursed.
“It doesn’t matter which team comes here, we dominate them, be it Arsenal or West Ham.
“Our luck will change at one time or another and it’s then that we’ll have to take it. I’m still confident because we create chances. It will come. I’m confident in my team.”
Pogba remains confident aht United will soon go on a winning run, despite “dropping silly points”.
“We just have to pay attention to the small details,” he said.
“Today we conceded a daft goal, against Arsenal it was also the small details.
“I’m still confident it will come right. We are dropping silly points, but it will come.”

Barca’s Alba doubtful for Clasico

Barcelona suffered a fresh injury blow on Monday as left-back Jordi Alba is a huge doubt for Saturday’s showdown clash with Real Madrid after suffering knee and ankle knocks.

“The tests carried out this morning reveal that Jordi Alba has heavy bruising on his right knee and a strain of his left ankle,” Barca said in a statement.

Militants Bomb NPDC Gas Pipeline In Delta

An unknown militant group in the Niger Delta region has reportedly blown up the Abura oil pipeline, a major oil trunk line operated by the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company around Osieta Avenue near Otu-Jeremi in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.
Our correspondent gathered that the trunk line was reportedly bombed on Sunday at about 6.40am by the militants causing a serious fire outbreak in the area.
The incident occurred a kilometre near the West African biggest Otorogu Gas Plant, at Otu-Jeremi, Iwhrekan and Otor-Udu communities across Ughelli South and Udu council areas of the state.
Residents of the area confirmed the incident, saying that the attack was heralded with explosion before they later observed a fire outbreak in the area.
A source said it was the swift intervention of the fire service from the Otorogu Gas Plant that stopped the raging fire from spreading to residential buildings which was just less than a kilometre from the scene of the incident.
There was no casualty in the incident which lasted for over five hours, another source added.
The Abura oil pipeline is one of the major trunk lines that supplies crude to the Otu-Jeremi Flow Station and the Otorogu Gas Plant.
The Chairman of Ughelli South Council Area, Mr. Paul Etaga, who had earlier visited the scene of the attack along with Lt. Col. U. Abdusalam, Commander, 222 Battalion, Agbarha-Otor, Ughelli North council, confirmed the incident.
Etaga, who spoke with our correspondent on Sunday evening, decried the attack, saying several economic trees in the area were razed down by the fire outbreak.
The Ughelli South Council Chairman said, “The incident led to a fire outbreak. Meanwhile, firefighters had quenched the inferno. We appeal to our youths and militants to desist from vandalising oil facilities. It only causes more harm to us, please.
A military source, who later confirmed the incident, said no culprit had been arrested in connection with the attack although investigation had commenced.
No militant group, including the Niger Delta Greenland Justice Mandate and the Niger Delta Avengers, has claimed responsibility for Sunday’s attack on the oil facility.

Mourinho ’ s two reds set another EPL landmark

Manchester United’s Jose Mourinho is fond of setting landmarks as a manager but becoming the first individual to be sent off twice in this season’s Premier League is not one he will covet.
No player in England’s top flight has yet been shown two red cards this term but now an angry man in a big coat has beaten them all to it following Mourinho’s dismissal during United’s 1-1 draw at home to West Ham United on Sunday.
If all that is not of great concern to Mourinho, then the plight of his expensively-assembled team, now 11 points off the pace and losing touch with the top four, definitely will be as United ponder their worst league start since 1990-91.
When you have won 22 trophies, eight league titles and the world coach of the year accolade, it is a bit of a comedown to now be dealing in the most red-carded manager category.
Mourinho’s latest sending off was for a show of petulance when he booted away a water bottle down the touchline in frustration after referee Jon Moss had booked United’s Paul Pogba for diving in the first half.
Referees in England are clamping down on dissent and this flagrant one prompted Moss to send Mourinho to the stands, just as he did last year when the Portuguese, then at Chelsea, had a halftime rant against the official also in a West Ham match.
It was striking how Mourinho’s second sending off in a month – he incurred the wrath of referee Mark Clattenburg in a draw with Burnley at Old Trafford in late October — coincided with another disappointing United showing against lowly opponents.
Whether his ill-discipline at Old Trafford could be linked to United’s impotence in those two matches is open to question, but there is no doubt that Mourinho’s behaviour is becoming an increasingly expensive failing.
Last month, he was fined £50 000 by the FA after comments about referee Anthony Taylor before United’s match with arch-rivals Liverpool.
His rant against Burnley came after United had been denied a penalty and he was given a one-match touchline ban and an 8,000 pounds fine. Now, the FA may consider another touchline ban, reports Reuters.
All of which could mean more post-match media work for Mourinho’s assistant Rui Faria, who took a leaf out of his boss’s book when talking of United being unlucky after their fourth consecutive draw at home.
Yet, in truth, there has been little that is unlucky about United’s failure to turn dominance into points as their blunt edge in front of goal has seen Stoke City, Burnley, Arsenal and now West Ham outplayed but game enough to hang on for a point.
“The reality is that we are playing well,” Faria said. “We create the opportunities but we are not scoring the goals and we are suffering.
“We can say we are unlucky and in the last matches we should get different results. We all believe the results will appear.”
Not that Faria ever assumes the other managerial duties.
“I don’t take over,” he said. “The boss is Jose all the time and he passes on what is the best for the team and we just try to make it happen without having him there.”
That is something United are just having to get used to.
