ASUU set to Embark on Nationwide strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has
threatened to embark on a nationwide strike to press home
its demands for the implementation of its 2009 agreement
with the Federal Government.
The ASUU Lagos Zone Coordinator, Prof. Olusoji Sowande,
said this at a news conference on Tuesday in Lagos.
Sowande said that the union was planning to toe this part
after several efforts to ensure that the government address
the pending demands, proved abortive.
He said that the 2009 FG/ASUU agreement, Memorandum of
Understanding (MOU) on funding of state universities,
breaches of the conditions of service and re-negotiation of
t
he agreement, were still pending.
The coordinator also mentioned other demands like the
exclusion of Nigerian universities from Pension Management
Company and non-release of NEEDS Assessment
Intervention Fund.
He said that funding of state universities, earned academic
allowance and renegotiation of the agreement were parts of
the outstanding issues.
Sowande recalled that the union had embarked on strike in
2012 and 2013 as part of the efforts to make the government
implement the agreement, adding that the issues remained
unresolved.
He said that the 2009 agreement provided for a periodic
review after every three years which had not been done.
“The review of the agreement should have been undertaken
in 2012 and 2015 but that did not happen.
“The implication is that our union has shown enough
patriotism and understanding on these matters in the last
four years.
“We are perplexed and disappointed that both the Federal and
State Governments are not responding to our consistent
appeals to bring about genuine transformation in the
education sector, ‘’ he said.
According to him, embarking on strike has never been a
favourable choice as the Students and ASUU members have
always suffered the pains more.
“It is unfortunate that the only language government appears
to respect and listens to is that of industrial action like
strike,”he said .
The don said that the National officers of the union had met
with the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu on
May 10 and tabled ten-point demand.
He said that the minister had promised that the issues would
be resolved within two weeks but nothing had been done till
now.
Sowande said that based on MOU signed in November 2013,
“Nigerian universities requires N1.3 trillion to revitalise the
system’’, adding that the government was already in arrears
of N605 billion as at the third quarter of 2016.
He said that the government had refused to release N128
billion and N250 billion respectively for the earned academic
allowance of three years after the MoU was signed.
“In order to forestall this avoidable crisis, we appeal to all
genuinely progressive individuals and groups to prevail on
both the Federal and State Governments to commence
release of funds for the listed purposes.
“This is to arrest the brewing and potentially combustible
situation in the Nigerian university system before it
degenerated into a serious conflagration,” he said.

Picture: Tragedy In Lagos As Man Jumps Into A River After Mentioning ‘Buhari’ Severally e

A major tragedy was averted on Monday in the commercial
city of Lagos state, when a man jumped into the river on
the Mile 2 Bridge in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area.
According to eye witness accounts, an unidentified man
reportedly jumped into the river on the Mile 2 Bridge in
Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos state
yesterday, August 29, after standing on the bridge for some
minutes, and loudly expressed bitterness over his sufferings
and how things had gone bad for him and his helplessness.
Daily Sun reported that the man was said to have mentioned
‘Buhari’ repeatedly, muttered some other words before he
finally took the terrible decision to jump inside the lagoon,
and the timely intervention of a passing speedboat
prevented the victim, who is in his 40s, from drowning.
It was gathered that passengers on the speedboat dived into
the river, dragged the man who was gasping for breath to
the riverbank, and continued their journey.
An eyewitness identified as Andy Odiaka, said the victim,
who wore native clothes, was left on the floor for a while,
unconscious, adding that he called the state emergency
number – 112, which facilitated the arrival of the Lagos
State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) in about 20 minutes,
as the 3-man medical team, went ahead of the bus to
resuscitate the victim.
Odiaka said: “I was there on the bridge where the man was
also standing. He was speaking to himself. He said he had no
transport fare to move from one place to another. He said his
suffering was too much that he could hardly feed. I also heard
him saying life was meaningless to him. He mentioned Buhari
many times, and the next thing I saw, the man jumped from the
bridge into the water.
“He is an Igbo man because he was speaking the language. I
thought he was joking when he said he was tired of everything
around him. “If not for a speedboat that was passing, he would
have died. The boat stopped and the passengers dragged him to
the riverbank and they continued their journey.
“Thereafter, nobody was ready to assist him. People simply
looked at him, expressed sympathy and continued their journey.
I have to call an emergency number,” he said.
Another witness, who simply gave his name as Okpala, said
he ran to the place and saw the man almost dying, but did
noit know what to do to help him out of the situation. He
said he mobilised others at the scene to donate money to
take the victim to a hospital. “The man said he was tired of
life and he wanted to kill himself,” he said.
When the victim’s pockets were searched for any means
identity, only N90 was found on him.

Niger Delta Militants Blow Up Oil Pipeline, Launches ‘Operation Crocodile Tears’

One of the Niger Delta militant groups have defied the
ceasefire agreement with the Federal Government with
another attack on oil facility in the South-south region.
Despite the ongoing military “Operation Crocodile Smile” in
the Niger Delta region, an Urhobo militant group, Niger Delta
Greenland Justice Movement, NDGJM, in the early hours of
today, blew up the Ogor-Oteri major delivery line, operated
by the Nigeria Petroleum Development Company and
Shorelines Petroleum in the state.
This has been deemed a mockery of the ongoing peaceful
negotiations in the restive region with the Movement of the
Emancipation of the Niger Delta, MEND leading the cause
has carried some influential Nigerians along.
The group in a statement by its leader self-styled “Gen” Aldo
Agbalaja, claimed responsibility for the attack executed by
its Uproot Team B at about 3.00 hours. The group also
announced the launch of “Operation Crocodile Tears” since
the military had launched “Operation Crocodile Smile” to
supposedly worsen the Niger Delta crisis.
“With the launch of their ‘Operation Crocodile Smile’, the Niger
Delta Greenland Justice Mandate is also serving a notice on the
commencement of our ‘Operation Crocodile Tears.’ It shall from
now on be an eye for an eye; for every military atrocity carried
out in the creeks and hinterland of the Niger Delta, the Nigerian
armed forces will have the Niger Delta Greenland Justice
Mandate to contend with
“To this end, we are alerting all those working in the UQCC/UPS
Erhomukokwarien in Ughelli, Eriemu Pigging Manifold in
Agbarha, Otorogun Gas Plant, Olomoro Flow Station, Warri
Refinery, Port Harcourt Refinery, Eleme, OB-OB and Obite gas
plants in Omoku to evacuate because what is coming to those
facilities are beyond what anybody has seen before,” the
statement read in part.
In view of this, hostilities in the Niger Delta region seem far
from over as the daily crude oil production falls drastically
to further complicate the worsening economy of Nigeria
under President Muhammadu Buhari.

Nigerian Air Force Helicopter Chrushes New Boko Haram Camp

The Nigerian Air Force says it has destroyed a new Boko
Haram Terrorist (BHT) Camp located between Malam Fatori
and Kangarwa in Northern Borno.
In an official statement signed by Ayodele Fayimuwa, the
Nigerian Air Force (NAF) disclosed that it has destroyed a
new Boko Haram terrorist camp located between Malam
Fatori and Kangarwa in Northern Borno during a night
operation on Monday.
“The new camp is about 4-6km away from the BHT location
attacked earlier on 20 August 2016 by NAF Mi-17 helicopter
within the same vicinity in a similar night operation that led to
the death of about 300 insurgents.
“The post-strike Battle Damage Assessment (BDA) mission had
revealed that surviving BHTs converged at the new location,”
the NAF spokesperson stated.
It said the information was later confirmed to be true by
series of follow-up Intelligence, Surveillance and
Reconnaissance (ISR) missions that led to the latest strike.
“Recall that the general area around Malam Fatori and
Kangarwa is infested with BHTs hence the need to clear the
remnants of BHT in the area.
“The air assault is therefore expected to further degrade the
capability of the insurgents while fostering the creation of the
necessary enablement for own ground troops to operate,” the
statement said.

Ministry of Solid Minerals Development confirms discovery of Nickel in parts of Kaduna

The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development on
Monday confirmed the discovery of Nickel in
parts of Kaduna State in North-West Nigeria.
Permanent Secretary, Mohammed Abbas, said the
ministry had been following up on the report by
its technical experts since the first discovery was
made several months ago.
“The Ministry is aware of the occurrence of the
mineral in parts of Kaduna State,” the statement
said. “Since the first discovery many months ago,
technical experts from the ministry have been
following up on this development as provided by
law.
The ministry urged Nigerians to allow
government come up with detailed reports on the
new find towards its development.
The statement confirmed a report by PREMIUM
TIMES that a private mining syndicate had
discovered nickel in Nigeria.
The private mining syndicate headed by Hugh
Morgan, a mining industry veteran, described the
discovery as unusual since it was found in small
balls of about three millimeters in diameter and
of a high purity in shallow soils, indicative of the
existence of a larger hard-rock Nickel field in the
area.
The discovery was said to be around Dangoma, a
small farming town about 160 kilometres
northeast of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT),
Abuja. The community also borders Kaduna state
to the west.
Nickel could potentially be a high foreign
exchange earner for Nigeria, particularly at a
time the country’s economy was facing the blight
of declining global crude oil prices.
Nickel is sold primarily for first use as refined
metal in manufacturing of many other alloys,
while about 65 per cent of it is consumed in the
West, used for the production of stainless steel
products.
Nigeria could join some of the world’s largest
producers of Nickel, which include Philippines,
Indonesia, Russia, Canada, and Australia,
according to the US Geological Survey.
At the moment, Nigeria’s current output of Nickel
is below 2.5 metric tons per annum, produced
mainly from scrap irons.
The discovery of the mineral in large volume
could see the country’s production capacity
increased significantly, as government has
already shown commitment to raise its capacity to
meet the country’s annual steel demand of 6.8
metric tons, Mr. Fayemi told Bloomberg recently.
